Captain Marvel

She's been a long time coming...

Okay, some perspective.

I'm a nerd. Serious nerd.I've read comic books since I could hold one in my hot little hands. My mother placated me during a vacation trip with three comic books to keep me from complaining. I don't remember what the other two were but I do remember one was Wonder Woman, set in WWII.

Since then, I have had a long time love affair with comic books.  The art! The stories! The paper! I read at least one issue of most of the major superheroes. I followed the epic adventures of Conan. I read Wonder Woman. I followed Superman, Batman, Captain America, the Green Lantern.

I kept up with the Justice League moreso than the Avengers. I consider myself a DC Comics gal over a Marvel gal (meaning no disrespect to the late, great Stan Lee. #Excelsior). But, I always followed the ladies. In a world dominated by male comic book heroes, this was not always the easiest thing to do. But as a youngster desperate for tales of empowered women, I learned to scan for the content I wanted. (How strange it is now, as an adult, seeing how prominently the female comic book heroes feature.) Yes, I read Wonder Woman.  I also found Ms. Marvel.

Ms. Marvel's history is a strange one (aren't most superheroes'?) and far too complicated to go into.  Here's a URL to Carol Danvers' Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Danvers

Suffice it to say that as our own culture and society progressed, so did she. Ms. Marvel became Binary, fighting alongside X-Men against both other mutants and aliens. She would eventually adopt the mantle of Captain Marvel and become part of not only the Avengers but the Guardians of the Galaxy.

All those who've seen Avengers Infinity War know (hopefully by now) who Nick Fury summoned during the post-credits scene. I don't know how many cheered in the theater as I did upon seeing the sigil, though.

It took decades for Wonder Woman to finally make it to the big screen. But when she did, her film broke records.

And now, finally, we are getting Captain Marvel. That Marvel Studios has chosen to tell the Carol Danvers' tale in this film shows that finally, women are getting a voice, getting a chance to shine in the spotlight.

I am looking forward to this film. Very much so.
